Broadcom killed free ESXi in February 2024, then quietly restored it as a Support Portal download in April 2025. By mid-2026 the ISO on offer is ESXi 8.0 Update 3e with an 8-vCPU-per-VM cap, no vCenter, and no support, but otherwise unlimited VMs on up to 2 physical CPUs. For a single-host learning box that costs nothing to license, the only real question left is what hardware to run it on. Two things changed the answer in 2026: 64GB DDR5 SO-DIMMs dropped to the point where a 128GB mini PC is buildable, and the mini PC vendors started shipping dual Intel 2.5GbE and even dual 10GbE SFP+ on sub-$500 boards.

This is not another generic "best mini PC" list. Every box below has a documented ESXi install behind it, mostly from William Lam, the VMware staff engineer who runs his own VCF 9 lab on mini PCs. Where a unit has a known compatibility snag, I name it rather than burying it. What gates an ESXi mini PC

Two things will sink an install before CPU or RAM ever matter, and both are worth stating up front because they reappear in every unit below.

Networking is the first. ESXi 8 recognizes Intel i225-V, i226-V, and X710 SFP+ controllers natively. It does not recognize Realtek out of the box. A mini PC with a Realtek NIC means you either inject the Community Networking Driver into the installer or hang a USB Ethernet adapter off the back. Boxes with Intel NICs skip all of that.

Core topology is the second. Intel 12th-generation and newer CPUs that mix P-cores and E-cores will purple-screen on boot unless you append cpuUniformityHardCheckPanic=FALSE to the ESXi boot line. Pure-E-core Intel parts (the N100, N150, N97 family) have no asymmetry and boot clean. AMD parts have no asymmetry and boot clean. This single boot parameter is not a dealbreaker, but it is the difference between a five-minute install and a wasted evening, and it is the main reason AMD mini PCs get recommended for ESXi more often than Intel ones.

RAM is the constraint that actually shapes how much lab you can run. vCenter Server in its default deployment size wants 14GB on its own. A useful single-host lab lands at 64GB. If you want nested ESXi or a small VCF stack, 96 to 128GB. DDR5 SO-DIMM pricing drove the 2026 market: a 64GB kit (2x32GB) sits around $120-150, and single 64GB sticks that enable 128GB in a two-slot machine run roughly $279 for the Crucial CT2K64G56C46S5.

Minisforum MS-01: the networking floor

If the lab goal is anything with vMotion, vSAN, or more than a handful of VMs hitting storage at once, the Minisforum MS-01 is the cheapest box that ships with four Intel NICs: two I225-V 2.5GbE ports and two X710 SFP+ 10GbE ports, all recognized by ESXi without a driver injection. William Lam documented the install in February 2024 and the community has been running it as a reference host since.

The CPU is an Intel Core i5-12600H (12 cores, 4 P-core / 8 E-core), which means the cpuUniformityHardCheckPanic=FALSE boot parameter applies here. Add it during install by pressing Shift+O at the ESXi boot menu. The machine takes up to 96GB DDR5-4800 across two SO-DIMM slots and has three M.2 slots, one of which accepts a 22110 or U.2 drive. It idles around 12-14W.

Barebone pricing runs near $423 at Newegg and Amazon when in stock. Configured with 32GB and a 1TB SSD, street price has landed around $775 on sale. For a lab where 10GbE matters and you want SFP+ rather than cabling up a separate switch, there is nothing else at this price with four native Intel ports.

The honest limitation: 96GB is the ceiling, and it is an Intel hybrid-core part, so you carry that one boot parameter for the life of the install.

GMKtec NucBox K11: the AMD value pick

The GMKtec NucBox K11 is the box I would hand someone building their first ESXi host. It runs an AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS, 8 cores and 16 threads on Zen 4, with two Intel i226-V 2.5GbE NICs and two M.2 Gen 4 slots. William Lam verified that two 64GB DDR5 SO-DIMMs are detected in full, giving 128GB, which is the differentiator that puts this ahead of the MS-01 for nested labs: more RAM headroom and no P/E core workarounds because it is AMD.

Base pricing sits in the $300-400 range for a barebone or low-RAM config. The realistic landed cost once you add a 64GB kit is around $620-650, which is the same caveat in my build guide: the $500 figure is the chassis before the RAM that makes the lab usable.

The documented snag is support, not the hardware. GMKtec's customer service is effectively unreachable, so buy it through Amazon for the return window rather than direct. If the unit posts and the NICs come up, it is a clean ESXi 8 install.

Minisforum MS-A2: the VCF and nested lab chassis

When the goal is a full VMware Cloud Foundation stack or a nested ESXi cluster on one physical box, RAM and core count dominate. The Minisforum MS-A2 is the current ceiling for that use case in a mini PC. It ships with an AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX, 16 cores and 32 threads on Zen 5, dual 10GbE SFP+ on the Intel X710, dual 2.5GbE RJ45, and a PCIe x16 slot that accepts a discrete GPU or a RAID card. William Lam has it running VCF 9.

Up to 96GB DDR5-5600 is supported across two SO-DIMM slots, and three M.2 slots plus the PCIe slot give storage room that none of the other boxes here match. Because it is AMD, there is no core-uniformity boot parameter to manage. Three of the four NICs are native Intel and need no driver injection; the catch is the fourth port, a 2.5GbE Realtek RTL8125, which ESXi does not see at all. Plan around three usable ports, not four.

Price is the gate. The 7945HX barebone starts around $799 and the 9955HX around $839, before RAM and storage. Once you populate 96GB and a couple of NVMe drives you are over $1,200. That is not a budget box; it is a single-host replacement for the three-or-four mini PCs people used to cluster for nested work.

Beelink EQ12: the $190 starter box

The Beelink EQ12 is the answer to a specific question: what is the cheapest Intel box that boots ESXi 8 with native networking and no driver injection. It runs an Intel Processor N100, four Gracemont cores with no P-cores, so the core-uniformity check does not apply. Critically it ships with dual Intel I225-V 2.5GbE NICs, which ESXi recognizes out of the box. William Lam's N100 install guidance applies directly, and there are documented community installs going back to early 2024.

The tradeoff is the RAM ceiling and the purpose. The EQ12 ships with a single DDR5 SO-DIMM slot and tops out at 16GB, on a four-core part. That is enough for ESXi, a vCenter appliance at the small deployment size, and two or three light workload VMs. It is not enough for nested ESXi, vSAN with multiple disk groups, or anything that wants to breathe. Idle draw is around 6W, which makes it a reasonable always-on box for Home Assistant, Pi-hole, and a vCenter you keep warm for study.

Street price is $190-220 with 16GB and a 500GB drive included. For someone whose goal is a VCP study host and who will upgrade to a K11 or MS-01 within a year, this is the lowest-risk entry point.

Rock-bottom N100 and N97 boxes

Below the EQ12 sit the N100 and N97 palm-sized cubes, the GMKtec NucBox G5 among them at roughly $150-200. They install ESXi 8 on the same Gracemont basis as the EQ12, with the same no-uniformity-check advantage, but most ship with a single Realtek NIC and soldered LPDDR5 that cannot be upgraded. That means a USB Ethernet adapter or a driver injection for networking, and a fixed 12-16GB RAM for the life of the box. Usable for a single isolated VM or a Tailscale exit node sitting under ESXi; not usable as a general lab host.

The install variable that applies to all of them

Every Intel 12th-gen-or-newer hybrid CPU in this list, which here means the MS-01's i5-12600H and any i9-13900H config, needs the boot parameter set at install time. The command from the ESXi boot menu:

Shift+O, then append: cpuUniformityHardCheckPanic=FALSE

After install, persist it so it survives reboot:

esxcli system settings kernel set -s cpuUniformityHardCheckPanic -v FALSE

The AMD boxes (K11, MS-A2) and the pure-E-core Intel boxes (EQ12, N100/N97 class) do not need this. If you are choosing between an Intel hybrid mini PC and an AMD one at similar price and RAM, this is the tiebreaker, not a marginal Passmark score.

Where this leaves you

The MS-01 is the cheapest path to four Intel NICs including dual SFP+ 10GbE, capped at 96GB and carrying one boot parameter. The K11 is the AMD value pick, 128GB-capable, dual i226-V, with the support caveat that makes Amazon the sane purchase channel. The MS-A2 is the one-box nested and VCF host, priced accordingly. The EQ12 is the sub-$220 starter that boots clean with native Intel NICs and tops out where starter boxes top out. The N100/N97 cubes are a networking project as much as a lab.

For most people building a first ESXi host in 2026, the decision is between the K11 and the MS-01, and it comes down to whether dual SFP+ 10GbE or a 128GB RAM ceiling matters more for the lab you intend to run.
